Essay on The Great Crash 1929 Book Review - 1602 Words
It is often said that perception outweighs reality and that is often the view of the stock market. News that a certain stock may be on the rise can set off a buying spree, while a tip that one may be on decline might entice people to sell. The fact that no one really knows what is going to happen one way or the other is inconsequential. John Kenneth Galbraith uses the concept of speculation as a major theme in his book The Great Crash 1929. Galbraithââ¬â¢s portrayal of the market before the crash focuses largely on massive speculation of overvalued stocks which were inevitably going to topple and take the wealth of the shareholders down with it. After all, the prices could not continue to go up forever. Widespread speculation was no doubt aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is not to say that people with less money will always throw out their inhibitions in order to achieve great financial wealth. People must be told that it is ok to venture outside of their safe zone and know th at what they are doing is right. Americans in the late 1920s received plenty of this type of encouragement from political leaders and assumed financial experts. Galbraith mentions the optimism of Calvin Coolidge as he was leaving office, the commitment of bankers such as Charles E. Mitchell to keep the boom going, and the ingenuity of John Jacob Raskob to include the average person in the market. He even points out Irving Fisherââ¬â¢s assumption that ââ¬Å"Stock prices have reached what looks like a permanently high plateau.â⬠The lay person already infected with the belief that anyone could get rich in the market now had the financial means and the support of informed intellectuals behind them. The choice to buy on margin seems to have been forgone conclusion to these people who were now buying into the dream everyone was selling them. The ability to gain a taste of the riches at a 50% or even possibly 75% discount in a bull market could be too much for any competent pers on to pass on. An individual with slightly more money might find the opportunity to double his profits as well given the situation. The author blames the low margin rates on the Federal Reserve, who inShow MoreRelatedDecade of Despair: Winnebago County During the Great Depression by Werner E. Braatz and Thomas J. Compensation surveys play an important part because they are used to get a good view of competitions wage practices which can help a company attract and keep an employee. Pay rate differences for jobs and the differences in employee contributions are represented by pay structures. An existing analysis of your current compensation system should be a starting point and balancing internal equity to the external market considered, if appropriate. Determining what your compensation philosophy and how to align with your business strategy and goals will guide the type of compensation design such as a pure market approach, a blended approach or perhaps a broad banding approach to enhance or totally update your current compensation system. The Basics of Market competitive pay system Market-competitive pay systems represent companies compensation policy should be developed to fit in with the competitive advantage of a company. It has a role in attracting and retaining the most qualified employees. A well designed pay system should promote the attainment of competitive strategies. But paying more than necessary can undermine low cost strategies as it is an undue burden. It also restricts the companyââ¬â¢s ability to invest in other strategic activities. Hence companies that pursue differentiation strategy must strike a balance between offering sufficiently high salaries to attract and retain talented people and providing sufficient resources to enable them to be productively creative. Major activities for market competitive pay system Compensation professionals create market competitive pay system based on four activities those are as follows: ? Conducting strategic system. ? Assessing competitorsââ¬â¢ pay practices with compensation surveys ? Integrating the internal job structure with external market pay rates and ? Determining compensation policies. Strategic analysis: Strategic analysis entails an examination of a companyââ¬â¢s external market context and internal factors. External factors could include industry profile, information about competitors, growth prospects (short and long-term). Internal factors encompass financial conditions, marketing capabilities, available human resources etc. Compensation surveys: Entails collection and subsequent analysis of competitorsââ¬â¢ compensation data. Compensation surveys traditionally focused on wage and salary practices. These days all benefits, allowances, perks etc. are collected and analyzed as these are key elements in market competitive pay systems. Surveys enable companies to obtain realistic view of competitorsââ¬â¢ pay practices. In the absence of surveys professionals would have to use guess work to build market competitive pay systems leading to wrong guesses resulting in noncompetitive pay. Data is usually collected on base pay levels, incentive award structures and mix and levels of discretionary benefits. Integrating the internal job structure with external market pay rate: Compensation professionals integrate the internal job structural with the external market pay rates identified through compensation surveys. This integration result in pay rates that reflect both the companyââ¬â¢s and the external marketââ¬â¢s valuations of job. Most often compensation professionals rely on regression analysis, a statistical method, to achieve this integration. Compensation policies: Compensation professionals recommend pay policies that fit with their companies standing a competitive strategy. Compensation professionals must strike a balance between managing costs and attracting and retaining the best qualified employees. Top management ultimately makes compensation policy decisions after careful consideration of compensation professionalââ¬â¢s interpretation of the data. Compensation surveys: Preliminary Consideration There are two important preliminary consideration compensation professionals take under advisement before investing time and money into compensation surveys: ? What companies hope to gain from compensation surveys ? Custom development versus use of an existing compensation surveys. Compensation surveys: Strategic Consideration Defining the relevant labor market: The relevant labor market represents the fields of potentially qualified candidates for particular jobs. Relevant markets are defined on the basis of occupational classification, geography and product or service market competitors. Companies collect compensation survey data from the appropriate relevant labor market. Choosing Benchmark Jobs: Benchmark jobs are key to conducting effective job evaluation as they play an important role in compensation surveys. HR professional determine pay levels for jobs based on typical market pay rates for similar jobs. Benchmark jobs have four characteristics those are: ? The contents are well known, stable over time, and agreed upon by employees involved. ? The jobs are common across different employers. ? The jobs represent the entire range of jobs that are being evaluated within a company. ? These jobs are generally accepted in the labor market for the purpose of setting pay levels. Integrating internal job structures with external market pay rates The compensation professionals use job evaluation methods to establish internally consistent job structure. Companies value jobs that possess higher degrees of compensable factors (10 years of experience) than jobs with fewer degrees of compensable factors (1 year of experience). These valuation differences ultimately should correspond to pay differences based on compensation survey data. It is important that companies set pay rates by using market pay rates as reference points as paying well below or well above the typical market rates can create competitive disadvantage for companies. Determination of compensation policy Normally companies can choose from three pay level policies: Market lead: The market lead policy distinguishes a company from the competitors by compensating employees more highly than most competitors. Pay levels are above market pay lines. It is clearly most appropriate for company that pursue differentiation strategies. Market lag: This also distinguishes a company but by compensating employees less than competitors. Pay levels fall below the market pay line. This policy appears to fit well with lowest-cost strategies because companies realize cost saving by paying lower than the market pay line. Market match policy: The market match policy most closely follows the typical market pay rates as companies pay as per the market pay. Pay rates fall along the market pay lines. The market match policy represent a safe approach for companies because they generally are spending no more or less on compensation than competitors. This policy does not fit with the lowest-cost strategy for obvious reasons. It does fit better with differentiation strategies.

Netball Essay Example
Netball Essay Example Netball Essay Netball Essay My sport, being netball,is easy to identify strengths and weaknesses on the court due to the game being in quite a small area compared to games like rugby or football, and also doesnt have too many people on the court (7 players to each team), therefore its not hard to concentrate on all the players. Here,i am evaluating my strengths and weaknesses for certain aspects of my game. I play GA (Goal Attack) in netball, which is one of the most important positions on the court, due to it being an attacking player,it also 1 of the 2 layers that can shoot,so good shooting techniques and attacking is essential. Things like co-ordination,agility,balance,fats reactions, etc is vital when playing this position. Skills/Techniques My strength for this section would be co-ordination. I fell my co- ordination is strong as when i have the ball,i can concentrate on all the players ahead of me and more importantly, can focus on the players that i need to pass to to get the ball into the shooting circle. I can also throw the ball in the right spot for an oncoming player which doesnt waste time. My co-ordination strength would be shooting aswell,as my shooting is mostly perfect,if not i can always get the target, but its the case of perhaps not lifting the ball high enough if i miss. My weakness here would be agility. Even though i feel my agility is reasonably good, there is alot of room for improvement. If i have a good defence against me,it can be harder to change direction quickly as they are sticking by me constantly to prevent me getting the opportunity to shoot. In netball,it is vital to be able to move quickly,so this,i need to practice more to nable myself to challenge good defenders more than i do now. A perfect netball model would be incredibly agile and challenge all her opponents without struggle or effort. Strategies/Tactics One of my strengths for this section would be working with my neighbour positions (GS,WA and C). In our team we work well together and can all understand each other. I know when to recieve from the center or wing attack as we all need to ball to be recived by me or the GS to be able to score. I find it easy to get into the right spaces in our attacking third as there is no vercrowding in the attacking third and everyone is working together. I can create moves to confuse the defender whic gives the other attacking players time to get away from their defenders. My weakness would come under the fact that when the ball is coming down the court from our defenders,I sometimes tend to rush into the centre third to bring the ball up to the shooting area. This often causes abit of rushing in the centre third, panicking and confusion. It also prevents the team from getting the ball down to the shooting hird due to an extra player being in the centre third when they should be up in the shooting third. The perfect netball model would be aware of the space she needs to create and only move to the centre third when is absolutly necessary e. g the other attackers cannot get away from their defenders. Fitness Finally,i see fitness as the most important aspect of any physical game. My strength for fitness would be my muscular endurance. I rarely ever feel my muscles getting tired through a game as i have developed muscular trength and endurance over the years and as ive got older its become stronger. My muscles can work for a long period of time i feel, and even towards the end of a game i can use them just as much and they work just as well as in the beginning of a game. The strength of my muscles especially in my legs help me to jump to intercept passes from the opposing side or a rebound off the shooting post. My weakness however would be my cardiovascular fitness. I dont feel know where near as fit as i could be. I think my ardiovascular fitness isnt as good as it used to be due to not doing as much training as i used to. I think it is vital in an all important match, coming towards the end of the game and you need just a couple of goals to win, fitness can change a game. Improving my cardiovascular fitness will help me become a better player by being able to constantly be on my toes and 100% alert, therefore help the game become more fluent. A perfect netball model would have superb fitness as it is essential, and would be able to keep strong throughout the game.

Korean 180 C-problem set 14 - Essay Example The people in the country are being used as tools for the leaders to achieve that political environment that they desire, but not one that will necessarily work. B) The myths in North Korean ideology are considered backward-looking because they are past events that have been brought into the present and given specific meaning. Many of these events are fabricated or exaggerated, which makes them different from the historical events, but acts as a tool of rallying the population for the countryââ¬â¢s cause. For example, there are myths about how the country once operated as a Communist state where everyone only took what they needed. This myth is used in order to show the population what the ideal society would look like. This is an effective manner of manipulating the population into acting according to the governmentââ¬â¢s political ideologies. C) Ideology prevents North Korea from moving forward into a modern society because it is very difficult for outsiders to understand the political ideologies that are held in the country. Since it is difficult for outsiders to understand, it is also difficult for outsiders to understand how the populations could take these ideologies seriously, which means that the rest of the world sees North Koreans as being less sophisticated than people of other nationalities are. D) Even though the idea of Juche is based on national pride, North Korea has received help from other communist countries. While this is somewhat awkward, it is justified because Kim Il Sung argued that the most important thing is to strengthen the Communist movement worldwide because this would end up being in North Koreaââ¬â¢s best interests. Kim said that internationalism and patriotism are interchangeable because they will both further the international Communist movement, which is something that would help North Korea in the long run. This was simply a manner of Kim getting the help he needed from other countries without losing the nationalist support in

A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway Essay Example for Free
A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway Essay The key to a good book is a great plot. The plot determines all the events in the story, from the first word, down to the last period. Ernest Hemingway is considered as a giant in the literary world. His book, A Farewell to Arms is a testament to his literary genius. A Farewell to Arms seems at first to be a love story. It is, but most importantly, the novel is a story about war, and the tragedy it brings. In his work, Freylagââ¬â¢s pyramid of narrative structure is clearly shown. Exposition The novel opens with a description of the place where the main character, Frederic Henry or simply called ââ¬Å"Tenenteâ⬠stayed. He is the narrator of the story. Hemingway illustrates late summer giving details like falling leaves turning into dust. Troops marching and flashes of fighting in the mountains create an atmosphere of doom to the reader. Hemingway prepares the setting by making a contrast of peace in nature and the disturbance brought about by the soldiers; a smaller picture of the bigger chaos that nations are facing in war. The characters are also established early in the novel. The narrator is an American volunteer ambulance driver. In the early part of the novel, he is introduced by a friend to Catherine Barkley, who is the focal point of Henryââ¬â¢s love in the story. Both are the main characters of the story. Others include, Rinaldi, the friend who introduced Henry and Catherine. A typical Italian male. The priest, Helen Ferguson, and other ambulance drivers also make up the characters that made World War I alive for the reader. Rising Action The novel is divided into five books. In the first book, Henry and Catherine are introduced and their relationship begins. The next few books follow the injury of Henry, and his growing relationship with Catherine while convalescing in a hospital in Milan, far from the action. Catherine becomes pregnant and Henry was forced to go back to the front, leaving her. Upon coming back, a retreat was ordered, were all officers were killed but Henry was able to escape. He was marked as a deserter and having found Catherine, travelled by boat to Switzerland. Here, Henry and Catherine lived a quiet life until she goes into labor. All these events, consist of the bulk of the novel. Hemingway had set many problems for Henry and Catherine. He wanted to show that Henry as a hero, was always stoic in adversities. Catherineââ¬â¢s burden started upon being pregnant but was not too much dwelled upon by Hemingway until the final book of the novel. Several conflicts were shown by Hemingway. The most apparent was Henryââ¬â¢s struggle with the tragedies of war. Henryââ¬â¢s friend was shot to death by Italians upon retreat; the killing spree of officers; Henryââ¬â¢s life as a deserter; the difficult escape to Switzerland by a rowboat . All these were the trials of Henry during the war, and what is ironic is that, he wasnââ¬â¢t in danger of the enemy, but of his comrades, of the soldiers that he had been fighting at the same side. These conflicts build up, highlighting the biggest conflict, the Climax. Climax Upon Henry and Catherineââ¬â¢s successful escape to Switzerland, Catherine goes into labor. The labor is long and painful for Catherine. After a Cesarean operation, the baby is stillborn; and Catherine haemorrages and dies. The Climax is the culmination of events which create the peak of the conflict. The above-mentioned scene is considered as the climax because, after all the efforts of Henry and Catherine went through to be together, all has been wasted in Catherineââ¬â¢s death. Falling Action After Catherine died, Henry was left alone with the doctor. He feels helpless and doesnââ¬â¢t want any gestures of comfort. The offers of the doctor to bring him to his hotel fell on deaf ears. After the peak of the climax, events that follow constitute the falling action. In his novel, Hemingway skillfully illustrates the unbearable grief and emptiness left upon the passing away of a loved one. The downward slide of Freylagââ¬â¢s pyramid accurately shows the feeling of the main character upon losing his love. Denoument The conclusion as its name suggests brings an end to the story. In A Farewell to Arms, after Henry went out and left the hospital, he walked back to the hotel in the rain. It is a sad ending that leaves a heavy heart to the reader. The novel is concluded by the image of Henry walking in rain. Rain usually represents gloom and sadness. In his conclusion, Hemingway shows the main character, the hero, no longer stoic but very much in pain. Works Cited Hemingway, Henry. A Farewell to Arms. New York: Charles Scribnerââ¬â¢s Sons, 1957.
