During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the Industrial Revolution began in Great Britain, and the working class worked tirelessly to produce products. Textiles were made faster and cheaper, food was more abundant, and the standard of living increased for many people. To industrialize Great Britain, laborers worked in factories and mills under horrible conditions. Despite attempts by Parliament to address problems with the factories’ working conditions through the passage of new legislation, their effort was inadequate and deplorable working conditions remained. Before the 19th century, the cottage industry flourished. All business and manufacturing was carried out in a person’s home, and they had a say in what happened to their product.†¦show more content†¦The growing businesses put the small in-home workers out of work, giving them no choice but to get a job in a factory. The working conditions in factories and mills were much different than the ones in the cottage industry. Instead of working at an individual pace in their home, the workers were suddenly expected to work in onerous conditions. The Factory Act of 1819 was one of the first attempts to control child labor, but the act was not effective. Years later, the Factory Act of 1833 was introduced, and the new law prohibited laborers under age 9 and set the maximum number of hours for children based on age. The Ten Hours act of 1847 limited women and children to 10 hours in the factory. These laws were meant to change society and the working conditions, but the lack of a strong penalty for factory owners gave them no motivation to follow the laws. In some cases, there was little to no legislation on some of the deplorable working conditions, and there was inadequate control over the health of laborers One of the most recognized conditions of the Industrial Revolution is the long hours. In most factories, children from as early as age six to adult women and men were required to work 12 or more hours six days a week. The exhausting work caused the workers to be prone to sickness and to be weaker. In most cases, workers would fall asleep while working, causing them to receive injuries and make mistakes in their work. Freddy Got Fingered Movie Review Essay Despite the lewd title, Freddy Got Fingered is actually a wonderful movie fit for people of all ages. Well, maybe not all ages. And definitely not for the light-hearted or more timid groups of people. The fact is, Freddy Got Fingered, written and directed by MTV star Tom Green, is chocked full of crude skits and dark humor. Green’s star character is played by himself, of course. Green plays a young adult by the name of Gord Brody who just wants to follow his dreams of being a T. V. show animator. His mind works â€Å"differently,† however, and his father, played by Rip Torn, doesn’t understand. The opening scene features Gord skateboarding through a mall and disrupting happy shoppers on his way to meet his parents and little brother, Freddy at the bus stop. Jim (Rip Torn) gives Gord a car so that he can go to Los Angeles to become the wonderful animator he strived to be. Gord happily accepts this car and drives away without a second thought. This is where some people would say the movie went downhill. Once in Los Angeles, Gord got a job at a cheese sandwich factory. His abrupt, creative mind was easily bored standing behind a conveyer belt sticking cheese on bread, however, so he did what any of us would do- get fired for sticking cheese on our head and walking down the conveyer belt! None of the other workers really paid attention to him walking all over the sandwiches, however. In the next scene, Gord goes to a production company hoping to show his sketches to a producer by the name of Dave Davidson (Anthony Michael Hall). When he goes searching for Mr. Davidson, he’s informed that he’s out to lunch. Gord tracks him down and goes to the restaurant Mr. Davidson is at just so he can show his sketches. Mr. Davidson is annoyed by this, obviously, but takes a look at Gord’s sketchbook any way. Mr. Davidson says no to Gord wanting his own show for the sketches, but offers some constructive criticism. He says â€Å"You have to get inside of the animals. † This line gets Gord through the rest of the movie. After being fired from the cheese sandwich factory and shot down by Dave Davidson, Gord makes the dreaded drive of failure back to his parents’ house. A few exciting, very comedic events take place on the drive home: Gord sees some lovely landscapes, wears a bloody deer hide, gets hit by a car, and makes it home just in time for dinner. The movie features a few more bloody, unholy scenes that may not be great for the eyes of some children. Gord, through a disturbing incident at a hospital, meets the love of his life, Betty. Betty (Marisa Coughlan) works at the front desk of the hospital, she’s an aspiring rocket scientist, and- to top everything off- she’s paralyzed from the waist down. The two instantly click and their love puts a very interesting perspective on the movie. Throughout the movie, Gord and his father argue and butt heads extensively. The constant feuding forces Gord’s mother (Julie Hagerty) to schedule a family therapy session. In this therapy session, the two men do not stop bickering. The therapist finally gets the noise level down and asks Gord to talk about his feelings. Gord then lies and tells the therapist that his father molests his brother, Freddy (Eddie Kaye Thomas)- hence the disturbing title. Everyone believes Gord except his father who, of course, knows it isn’t true. The therapist makes some calls and takes Freddy- who I might add, is actually an adult- away to a foster home. In spiraling events, Gord’s mother leaves his father, his father becomes a drunk, Gord finally gets his TV show and sends his father to Afghanistan only to be captured by a terrorist group. The movie ends with Gord and his father returning home safely and a warm welcome from the public. This movie is crude, violent, and socially unacceptable. However, all of these things make up a great movie. I give this movie a 9/10. The only problem with this movie is that it’s only 90 minutes long.

Child abuse is common all over the world. Child abuse can lead to non accidental head injury (NAHI) or Abuse related craniocerebral trauma. These are injurious to the health of children. A number of children die every year due to the NAHI all over the world. In addition to this NAHI and SBS are the most common and frequent cause of death in the children of age between 6 to 12 months. Shaken baby syndrome includes violent shaking of a child, held by torso or extremities. The violent shaking of child causes uncontrolled abrupt head movements which eventually lead to trivial bruising or any trauma. The clinical symptoms of SBS include signs of severe diffuse cerebral trauma that is subdural hemorrhage, encephalopathy and retinal hemorrhage. On the other hand, it is easy for the physicians to diagnose encephalopathy, retinal hemorrhage and subdural hemorrhage from eye examinations and radiology images (Findley, Barnes, Moran, and Squier, 2011). It is also evident that the infants are soft and delicate and even a small injury can pose a threatening effect on their future lives. They are also more tolerant of increased intracranial pressure. A common cause of delay in the diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome is that the assessment of signs and symptoms of SBS in infants are not easy. This is because of the reason that the infants are in their developmental stage. Commonly, the Glasgow Coma Scale is used to measure the level of impairment in the children by the shaken baby syndrome. This scale is not reliable enough and the results obtained from this scale are doubtful. The diagnosis of SBS is difficult; however, following conditions prevailing in a child can lead the healthcare professionals towards the diagnosis of SBS. One third of the survivors of SBS may experience adverse conditions and disabilities, like lack of ability to walk, sit, or breathe. Most of the survivors undergo a vegetative state, and become nonresponsive throughout their lives. However, some survivors suffer from behavioral and learning problems, seizures, blindness, and other disabilities in their upcoming future (Matschke, Herrmann, Sperhake, Kà ¶rber, Bajanowski, and Glatzel, 2009). Recommendations Education is the best practice that can lead to prevention of shaken baby syndrome. The most significant intervention that nurses can take is the provision of education to the parent/caregiver, instead of assisting in life saving measures. On the other hand, parents should be educated about the effective measures that can be taken to prevent SBS. Despite the fact that the newborn babies cry a lot, however, the behavior of the parents should calm and cool towards their new born child. If the baby continuously cries, then the parents should make sure that any signs of illness are prevailing or not, or make sure if the child is hungry and needs to be burped. If parents suspect any sort of injury or illness in the young children, they should immediately consult a doctor (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC, 2012). Comparing The Lottery and What A Thought    The short stories I have chosen were "The Lottery" and "What A Thought" by Shirley Jackson. Shirley Jackson is considered a morbid writer due to the fact that she writes her stories with the intent to shock her readers into seeing the truth behind human nature. Her work deals with an evil presence in everyday life. "The Lottery" is a chilling tale of an everyday town and their annual lottery. It shows how cruel a town can be in protecting their tradition and rituals and how not even friendship matters. The second, being found in a collection of 50 short stories found after Jackson's death, shows how quickly a wife of many years can turn on her husband without warning. Both stories contained strong imagery and foreshadowing events leading up to the climax. "The Lottery" was written shortly after World War II, however it is unknown as to when Jackson wrote "What A Thought".      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   "The Lottery" and "What A Thought" follow Shirley Jackson's usual scheme of shock value. Both stories show of how quickly, no matter what length of time people have coincided together and bonded together, one can turn on another. "The Lottery" showed of how a small everyday town will do anything to hold their traditional values. The town believed that they had to make a human sacrifice to the land in order to have good crops. Therefore every year they held a lottery to find out who the sacrifice would be. In the story "What A Thought" a husband who would do absolutely anything to keep his wife happy was brutally killed just because that is the way his wife felt on that day. These are things that tie in... ...mmer is associated with life, not death. In "What A Thought" the husband is almost perfect. Who would ever want to kill the perfect husband? Just moments before the terrible thoughts the wife was feeling pride for her husband who never did things like sleep after dinner as most men do. How her husband would do anything for her and yet without wanting to kill him, she had the longing to do so.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Shirley Jackson definitely can prove a point. She uses great foreshadowing, irony and symbolism shown in both of these stories. Her style is unique to other writers but does not differ much within her own writings. "The Lottery" and "What A Thought" were very good selections for me to chose because they held great meaning behind dark story lines. The German public was showered with rhetoric from Hitler and his supporters that led them to believe that the Jewish people were responsible for their economic burdens. This is different in many ways, but I feel that the similarities are plentiful and frightening. Throughout the rest of this paper I will summarize the rise of radical Islamism from modernization and dependency. I will also demonstrate possible strategies for Islam regress from this type of thinking. Theorists, philosophers and many other feel that the rise of radical Islamism can be attributed to dependency and modernization. I do not agree with them but in the slightest extent, and I will further elucidate my thoughts. As states in my introduction, I feel that radical Islamism is eerily similar to Nazi-ism. For example, I feel that they have definitely used the theories of dependency and modernization to further their rhetoric against Christianity, however I do not feel that dependency and modernization themselves have had that dramatic of effect on the Islamic people. These changes in society and culture are not the reasons for terrorism and suicide bombings; it is the teachings of their radical leaders that lead them down these extreme paths. The economic life of Islam is very simple. It is based upon solid foundations and Divine instructions. Earning ones living through decent labor is not only a duty but a great virtue as well. Dependence of any able effortless person on somebody else for a livelihood is a religious sin, a social stigma and disgraceful humility. A Muslim is enjoined by God to be self-supporting and to stay away from being a liability on anybody. Islam respects all kinds of work for earning one’s livelihood so long as there is no indecency or wrong involved. With a clear conscience and due respect from society the Muslim can roll up his sleeves and undertake any kind of work available to provide for himself and his dependents. Prophet Muhammad is reported as having said that it is far better for one even to take his rope, cut wood, pile it up and sell it in order to eat and give charity than to beg others whether they give him or not. According to Islam, the status of honest working men cannot be lowered on account of the kind of work they are doing for a living. Yet the laboring workers have no limited scope for improving their lots and raising their standards as high as possible. They have equal opportunities at their disposal and enjoy freedom of enterprise. To me, it does not sound like modernization or dependency should have caused these people to take up arms and start blowing up national landmarks. Whatever the individual makes or earns through lawful means is his private possession, which neither the State nor anybody else can justifiably claim. In return for this right of private possession he has only to fulfill certain obligations to the society and pay certain taxes to the State. When this is done, he has full rights to protection by the State, and his freedom of enterprise is secure and guaranteed. Under the Islamic system the menace of capitalism or communism never arises. The enterprising individual is responsible for the prosperity of the State, and the State in turn is responsible. The reason that Islamism turned radical was from the radical teachings of certain Islamic leaders. These leaders used political rhetoric and social propaganda to fuel their anti-Christian teachings and spread their extreme beliefs. They convinced their people that Christianity and Democracy were evil and capitalist. That Allah would want them to use whatever means necessary to stop the spread of this type of structure from poisoning their society. This is why we see radical Islamism. I must say, it does seem like a modern form of Nazi-ism. However, not that I have examined where I think these problems root from, let me briefly examine how I think moderate Islamic leaders can bring an end to these extreme followings. Traditional Islam is a very simple way of life, and that is what these leaders need to bring to the forefront. The moderate teachers and leaders need to put themselves out in the public and stress the teachings of Muhammad and the traditional Islam religion. They need to show them that all of this violence contradicts these teachings and the beliefs that their religion is founded on. Stress to the people of Islam that they need to find their traditional roots once again. Suggest to them that they need to get back to the basics. The fundamentals of Islam are not about terrorism or political gain. They can even take it one step further and tell them that their current actions mirror that of the capitalists. Islam is not about making political statements and random acts of violence. Islam is a simple way of life based on the five pillars that I will describe below: The shahadah, which is the basic creed or tenet of Islam: aÃ… ¡hadu al-lÄ  ilÄ ha illÄ -llÄ hu wa aÃ… ¡hadu anna muÄ §ammadan rasÃ… «lu-llÄ h, or I testify that there is none worthy of worship except God and I testify that Muhammad is the Messenger of God. This testament is a foundation for all other beliefs and practices in Islam. Muslims must repeat the shahadah in prayer, and non-Muslims wishing to convert to Islam are required to recite the creed. Salah, or ritual prayer, which must be performed five times a day. Each salah is done facing towards the Kaaba in Mecca. Salah is intended to focus the mind on God, and is seen as a personal communication with him that expresses gratitude and worship. Salah is compulsory but flexibility in the specifics is allowed depending on circumstances. In many Muslim countries, reminders called Adhan (call to prayer) are broadcast publicly from local mosques at the appropriate times. The prayers are recited in the Arabic language, and consist of verses from the Quran Zakat, or alms-giving. This is the practice of giving based on accumulated wealth, and is obligatory for all Muslims who can afford it. A fixed portion is spent to help the poor or needy, and also to assist the spread of Islam. The zakat is considered a religious obligation (as opposed to voluntary charity) that the well-off owe to the needy because their wealth is seen as a trust from Gods bounty. The Quran and the hadith also suggest a Muslim give even more as an act of voluntary alms-giving (sadaqah). Sawm, or fasting during the month of Ramadan. Muslims must not eat or drink (among other things) from dawn to dusk during this month, and must be mindful of other sins. The fast is to encourage a feeling of nearness to God, and during it Muslims should express their gratitude for and dependence on him, atone for their past sins, and think of the needy. Sawm is not obligatory for several groups for whom it would constitute an undue burden. For others, flexibility is allowed depending on circumstances, but missed fasts usually must be made up quickly. Some Muslim groups do not fast during Ramadan, and instead have fasts different times of the year. The Hajj, which is the pilgrimage during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah in the city of Mecca. Every able-bodied Muslim who can afford it must make the pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in his or her lifetime. When the pilgrim is about ten kilometers from Mecca, he must dress in Ihram clothing, which consists of two white seamless sheets. Rituals of the Hajj include walking seven times around the Kaaba, touching the Black Stone, running seven times between Mount Safa and Mount Marwah, and symbolically stoning the Devil in Mina. The pilgrim, or the hajji, is honored in his or her community, although Islamic teachers say that the Hajj should be an expression of devotion to God instead of a means to gain social standing. If I were to give any advice to the leaders and teachers that can make a difference and try to bring and end to radical Islamism, it would be to bring these fundamental teaching back to the forefront. As a senior year in high school, I was lucky to have my first professional position in charge of advertising, sales and customer service for a small company. In addition to professional experience, I also learned good business values and financial responsibility from working closely with the owner. Thus, when I was accepted to UC Riverside, my decision to be a Business Administration major seemed logical. But after reading a few books on investing and contemplating everything that my mother taught me about being smart with money, concentrating in Finance made perfect sense. But my world still felt enclosed. I had vague ideas of where a degree in business could take me, but nothing concrete. My life was too narrow and Californian. I wanted to see the world and how social interactions and motivations were different in a foreign culture. I needed to experience life away from home and meet new people from around the world to recognize what my career path would be. With these goals and dreams, I applied for the UC Education Abroad Program (EAP) to study abroad in Hong Kong. To say that I have discovered myself would be clichà © and a terrible understatement. The US Census Bureau indicates that occupational achievement of individuals and the ability to perform tasks with the use of scarce skills provide higher incomes. Thus, education remains one of the major factors that influence income distribution, there by having a considerable effect on economic inequality. Global inequality may have certain implications for international relations, as well as it may increase relative deprivation among nations. Besides, global inequality may have social and political consequences, â€Å"depending on the individual’s perception and interpretation of inequality, mediated by social relations, institutions and cultural context† (Neckerman & Torche, 2007, p. 351). Thus, a number of solutions have been suggested that would support a more equal or fair economic environment within the United States and worldwide. First of all, it would be better to reduce inequalities in earnings. In order to reduce inequalities in income, it is required to develop and implement the appropriate policies, such as introducing a minimum wage at a reasonable level, reducing unemployment in the United States and worldwide, adopting progressive taxation system, according to which â€Å"tax rate should be increased with the increase of income level†, redistributing labor resources more effectively, providing total control over the existing monopoly prices, providing social security policies, such as pensions, unemployment allowances, etc. (Jain & Khanna, 2007, p. 66). Secondly, wealth inequality should be reduced through effective taxation system. According Mott Tracy (2010), â€Å"wealth inequality is much more severe than income inequality and is the major contributor to income inequality† (p. 136). The individuals, who have accumulated wealth, should be ready to pay wealth taxes. Thirdly, inequality of opportunity should be eliminated through effective strategies, such as providing equal opportunity to getting education, healthcare services, etc. (Becker, p. 137). In fact, many nations realize the importance of equal opportunity today, and try to make opportunity accessible to all members of society.

Shays Rebellion brought debates over the constitution. People were fighting about Shays Rebellion because they were unhappy. They were unhappy because they believed they were not getting the freedoms they deserved. Shays Rebellion got Its name after a guy named Daniel Shay. He was a farmer who refused to pay taxes on his land because he believed he should not have to. So, when they came to take it away he put up a fight.Daniel Shay rebelling gave others the guts to stick up for what they wanted as well. This was being discussed In the court because people started to voice their disagreements with The Articles of Confederation since Daniel Shay did. Block 2-After Shays Rebellion This block shows where the next convention took place. There was obviously a problem with the articles. Originally the meeting was to fix the articles, but instead they created something completely different. Block 3-Articles of Confederation The third block represents the constitutional convention and people arguing about whether or not the U.S government should be ran on The Articles of Confederation. It was written so that the united States had rules to abide by and to finally have some of their own law In order. The Articles had many problems with It though, With It congress has no right to tax, they also had no power to regulate foreign and interstate commerce, there was no national court system, and several others. Block 4- Virginia Plan The fourth block Is showing representatives of Virginia coming up and having a plan that they believe will solve a ma]orally of the Issues.The purpose of the Virginia Plan was to protect the large states' interests in the new government. Many smaller states disagreed with this. Block 5-Virginia Plan Problems This block represents the problems with the Virginia Plan. Obviously the main Issue which all the delegates could tell right away was the unfair advantage the larger states got. They had this idea that every state would only have two representa tives which was not in the smaller states favor again. Block 6- New Jersey Plan The sixth block has delegates coming up to the stand to speak on behalf of the reports of the New Jersey Plan.In this block It also shows how Connecticut also had a plan yet it was ignored and was not even acknowledged. That is showed by the delegate representing the Connecticut Plan with his hand up yet not being acknowledged. The NJ Plan was brought up after the Virginia Plan, it was a way for the smaller states represent themselves and to also make sure that they got the liberties that they needed. Under the NJ Plan Congress had the power of setting and collecting taxes which some looked as good and others viewed as a negative.Block 7- Problems with the NJ Plan This block continues with the NJ Plan being discussed but people now are beginning to bring up the good and bad points on it, bad Including each state having the same number of representatives. Meaning a small group would have the same number a s 1 OFF possible to pass laws some laws that not all the people would agree with. Block 8- The Great Compromise The eighth block shows The Great Compromise finally being adopted after a week and a half and tons of discussion on July 16th.The Great compromise was a ambition of the New Jersey Plan and the Virginia Plan featuring the fact that none of them had enough good things about them for it to be adopted by itself. It can also be known as The Connecticut Plan because while coming up with it Connecticut finally got a voice. Block 9- How Great compromise led to the constitution Well first off it had a big impact on all states. They all agreed that they should have two senators and that they should have an equal amount of representatives. Which was a plus that they finally agreed on that because in both plans they had different opinions on that topic.When it was passed it brought hope and spirit to the people of the U. S. That hope helped to lead the idea of the Constitution. Block 10-The â€Å"Real Revolution† After The Great Compromise being accepted finally it solved several issues and allowed the states to finally have a government that seemed reliable. The Real Revolution was more than the War of Independence. It began before the war with Britain and it lasted until after due to the fact that it was a revolution worth fighting for. So, this block shows people getting along and agreeing happily for the first time in a long time.
